Emanuel Sandhu
Emanuel Sandhu is a Canadian Olympian, three-time Canadian Men’s Figure Skating Champion, Grand Prix Final Champion, back-to-back Skate Canada International Champion, Cup of China Grand Prix Champion, and an 11-time World Championship team member. A two-time Olympian (Salt Lake City 2002, Torino 2006; alternate in 1998), he earned small medals in both the Short Program and Free Program at the World Figure Skating Championships and achieved an overall world ranking inside the top five. He became Canada’s Junior National Champion right here in beautiful Vancouver!
Born in Richmond Hill, Ontario, Sandhu is also an accomplished dancer and a graduate of Canada’s National Ballet School, one of the world’s foremost ballet academies, where he trained for 10 years. His versatility led him to place as a Top Three Male finalist on the hit television series So You Think You Can Dance Canada, followed by a nationwide tour.
A technical innovator, Sandhu is the first figure skater in history to complete a triple–triple–triple jump combination in competition. He also created several original spins—including the famously flexible “Sandhu Spin”—and is recognized globally for his rare blend of athleticism, musicality, artistry, and powerful performance, merging quadruple jumps with drama.
Of Italian–East Indian heritage, he received the Indo-Canadian Chamber of Commerce Lifetime Achievement Award at age 17, along with the YTV Youth Achievement Award, the Premier’s Athletic Award, and a nomination for Canada’s Male Athlete of the Year. He was inducted into the Skate Canada British Columbia/Yukon Hall of Fame in 2023 and the Richmond Hill Sports Hall of Fame.
Beyond the rink and studio, Sandhu is deeply committed to philanthropy, and has lent his time and profile to many local and national charities, including The Pledge to End Bullying, the Red Cross, the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, Face the World Foundation, and Raise-a-Reader.
His professional show career includes featured performances in Stars On Ice, Art On Ice, Holiday Festival on Ice, Rock the Ice, Japan Open, Opera on Ice (Italy), Red Square Ice Show (Moscow), Wintertournee (Germany), and International tours with both the National Ballet of Canada’s Nutcracker and Canada’s National Ballet School.
As a choreographer, Sandhu has created programs for World and Olympic Champions and originated principal roles—both skating and choreographic—in Evgeny Plushenko’s groundbreaking productions The Nutcracker, Swan Lake, Cinderella, and Sleeping Beauty, which uniquely fuse ballet and figure skating.
Sandhu’s interests span design, space and science, business, drama, art, and music. He is also a singer-songwriter and has recorded several original tracks.
Coaching internationally since 2011, he is dedicated to inspiring the next generation with his passion, creativity, and unwavering commitment to developing skaters both as athletes, artists and as people.
