Off-Ice Conditioning Program Information
The Coquitlam off-ice training program has been developed by Sheri Delmaestro to improve performance on the ice and therefore, achieve greater results in each athlete's skating, in a shorter period of time, as well as reduce the incidence of skating related injury. Sheri also feels very strongly that it is just as essential to give skaters the education they need to make sound fitness and nutritional choices for life. Figure skating is a sport that requires the ultimate in aerobic capacity cardiovascular endurance), anaerobic (quick, short distance capacity), power explosiveness in the muscles), muscular strength, muscular endurance (the ability of a muscle to sustain strength for a longer period of time), balance (all movements on the ice require balance in some form), agility (the ability to recruit quick-twitch muscles) and flexibility (the range of motion around each specific joint in the body). We are very fortunate to have the most up to date equipment to facilitate this. The off-ice program will include skipping, running (middle and short distance), ultimate circuits, strength training (tubing, free weights, Plyo Balls and for the Senior classweight training in the gym), balance (using own body in space, the BOSU Balance Trainer, Extreme Balance Board, SitFit, and stability balls), agility (agility ladders, hurdles), plyometrics (Plyo balls, Reebok Steps, BOSU), muscular endurance (Plyo balls, tubing, weights), flexibility, Pilates and training of sport specific elements such as jump and spin technique.
